Moving to Townsville from interstate: what to plan for
Register an interstate car in Queensland within 14 days of moving, with a Queensland safety certificate, and switch to a Queensland licence once you have lived here for 3 months. If you can choose your dates, move between May and October: about two-thirds of Townsville rain falls from January to March.
The deadlines that start when you arrive
Two Queensland Government deadlines start once you move here:
- Your car: if you bring a vehicle registered in another state and keep it at a Queensland address, you have 14 days to register it in Queensland, and you may be fined if you don't. You hand in the interstate plates and provide a current Queensland safety certificate.
- Your licence: once you have lived in Queensland for 3 months, you need a Queensland driver licence. Transfer it when you change your registration.
Book the safety certificate for your first week. If your car is going north on a car carrier, check its delivery date against the 14 days.
Picking a time of year
Townsville has a long dry season and a short, very wet summer. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for Townsville Aero show:
| Month | Mean rainfall | Rain days (1 mm or more) |
|---|---|---|
| January | 274.4 mm | 11.7 |
| February | 312.9 mm | 12.7 |
| March | 197.9 mm | 9.7 |
| July | 15.5 mm | 2.0 |
| September | 9.9 mm | 1.2 |
About two-thirds of the year's average rain falls from January to March. If your dates are flexible, aim for May to October.
Getting quotes for the long haul
When you ask for interstate quotes:
- Give an inventory, room by room, with the large items listed.
- Ask whether the price covers loading, transport and unloading, or whether any of those are separate.
- Ask about storage if your new home is not ready on the delivery date.
- Ask what happens if access at either end is harder than expected, such as stairs, long carries or no truck parking.
The Queensland Government advises asking whether a removalist's price is based on time or quantity, and getting the quote in writing.
Insurance
The Queensland Government warns that most removalists only insure their own vehicles. Before moving day, check whether your contents insurance covers goods in transit, and think about separate transit insurance for valuable items.
Renting when you arrive
If you are renting in Townsville, your bond goes to the Residential Tenancies Authority, which also handles bond refunds when you leave. When you eventually move out, a bond clean helps get the bond back.
